Alex Turner Interview With Annie Macleod
Of the album's space theme, Turner told BBC Radio 1's Annie Mac: 'I think it started with the idea of science fiction and how the worlds that are often created in it, the idea of space travel or time travel or whatever it might be, is quite often, by my estimations, used to. Alex Turner can go back to being the everyman we once saw him as. But it won't be any more 'real' than the persona he presents in 2018. Look closely at that Annie Mac interview. Watch his recent, revealing interview with Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1: he sounds more Sheffield than ever. Turner has swiftly killed off the teddy boy character he played on ‘AM'.
Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys returned with their 6th studio album, Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino on Friday. An album that's been so divisive that it has split the fan base on its ‘different style'. Here we take a look at the album.
Firstly, if you haven't yet listened to the album then ‘where have you been'? Secondly, if you were expecting ‘another AM', then you are in for a total SHOCK. Whether positive or negative, this depends on your opinion.
Arctic Monkeys didn't release a single for the album prior to its release. Other than some live bootlegs of new songs or YouTube clips, the band managed to keep the style of the album under wraps until its release yesterday.
The album starts off with ‘Star Treatment', with the opening lyrics ‘I just wanted to be one of The Strokes, now look at the mess you made me make'. Possible foresight into the departure of the bands usual style. Next we have ‘One Point Perspective', How to select files on mac. which starts with a piano and spacey chorus, with the band making the style evident already in the first couple of songs.
With Alex Turner's interview with Radio 1's Annie Mac on Thursday, he explained that the collection of songs for Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino were originally written on his own on piano, before presenting them to the rest of his band, the element of the album being different, even Alex Turner wasn't sure the rest of the band would go for it, but go for it they did.
The style of the album certainly has more of a The Last Shadow Puppets feel to it than previous Arctic Monkeys, the stonking guitar riffs of previous albums are absent, with the piano introduced as a focal part of the song writing and the song melodies, the album carries out a theme of the Tranquillity Hotel from start to finish, by the end of the album, you feel like you have been to space and back.
Featuring a zen like journey to space, in our opinion, the album is a triumph, its very very brave, its not one for the ‘beer throwers' of the live concerts to be chucking beers over anyone in front of them, this is a more relaxed album, better placed, being able to sit on the grass with a cold drink gazing into the stars.
In further songs, you can see influences on the album from David Bowie, to Radiohead to The Beach Boys (Golden Trunks) to Serge Gainsbourg (Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino), with its more avant-garde experimental ideas.
Songs like ‘American Sports' and ‘Four Out Of Five' are two of the more radio friendly songs on the album. Whilst it lacks standout ‘singles', the album needs to be listened to in full in full flow. With the popularity of streaming sites, lots of people pick and choose individual songs for playlists rather than listen to an album all the way through.
Arctic Monkeys first album title ‘Whatever People Say I Am, Thats What Im Not' almost sums up the expectations of the album, what you thought the Arctic Monkeys were, then that pigeonhole will certainly be different after this. A look on Twitter and you will see comments such as ‘it doesn't even sound like them' ‘its garbage‘, ‘rubbish', ‘wheres the guitar Alex?', ‘Pretentious'. The initial response to their last album AM was certainly more ‘positive'. With many of the band residing in America, and highly successful from previous albums, the boys from Sheffield have grown up, singing about fruit machines and riot van's will seem nothing but a distant memory.
The album closer The Ultracheese, is a piano laden jazz croonersque style, you can imagine Alex Turner sat on the piano with a vodka martini. If ever a man was ready to write a James Bond theme tune….

It takes you on a journey to the Tranquillity Hotel and back during its 40 minute duration. Musically Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino is a beautiful album, something to relax and enjoy. It also shows off a different range of Alex Turners vocals and his songwriting ability.

I personally love the album, I think its slick and smooth and see's the band go another level with the songwriters. The album will not be enjoyed by everyone. In fact, many will be disappointing, with many still reeling in the shock value of the first listen of the album, it may indeed be a quintessential ‘grower' of an album. To those we simply say…. give it another go.
